Maldives NGOs Federation comprises of 42 NGOs from Male’ and the Islands in a vision of developing social development area as a separate sector. In the annual meeting apart from electing members to the council a strategic plan was formulated for the upcoming 5 years.
The member NGOs had also raised concerns over the NGO law, claiming it inhibited development of the NGO sector. In this regard HAD’s Executive Director and the vice president of Maldives NGO Federation said government authorities needed to “understand” the NGO law. “In the meeting, we have learnt that government authorities applied the law inconsistently in providing business opportunities and registering assets, at different times,” he said. “[The authorities] have registered assets and gave permission to operate businesses for some NGOs, while [they] declined permission to others.”
