The Youth Sports Festival will take place 2 – 18 December 2009 and will consist of the HAD Teen Cup Futsal Tournament and HAD Youth Cup Volleyball Tournament. The general objective of HAD’s Youth Sports Festival is to create a friendly, supportive environment for Hoadedhdhoo’s youth to gather and improve their health and peer relationships. In total, 11 football and 7 volleyball matches will occur. Not only will this event encourage maintaining physical and mental health through sports activities, it also provides an alternative to drug use and committing petty crimes. Additionally, this festival will also provide youth an outlet to showcase and improve their athletic abilities, while also developing their leadership skills through teamwork and good sportsmanship. The festival will also be a positive social event for Hoadedhdhoo’s community to gather. Furthermore, the youth participants as well as youth and community spectators will benefit from the drug prevention and environmental protection awareness campaigns; their knowledge about these issues will increase as will their capacity to improve environmental and community health. Creating a supportive social environment for Hoadedhdhoo’s youth and facilitating constructive sporting activities will prevent criminal activities such as drug use and petty crime. The Youth Sports Festival will also improve Hoadedhdhoo’s civil society cooperation via coordination with other NGOs to create ongoing positive youth activities. This event also provides a great public relations opportunity for sponsors to highlight their philanthropic support to Hoadedhdhoo’s rural community and have province-wide advertizing opportunities. Sponsors’ advertisements will be prominently placed at all sporting events, the HAD Biz and HAD Resource Centre, as well as visible to a national viewing audience thanks to the TV Maldives media coverage of the entire Festival.
